Sebastopol, CA. (05/10/2010) - Offering audio, images, usage examples, and related lexical data to a web audience no longer requires expensive, up-front licensing agreements.
eSpindle Learning, a CA 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, offers its comprehensive 150,000 word resource--one of the largest available online--via the economical "Subscription as a Service" (SaaS) model.
The organization has been licensing data for years, and has appointed a new manager to focus on expanding its SaaS subscriber base. In same cases, data feeds have even been donated, such as audio support for the popular study site www.FreeRice.com.
SaaS allows subscribing domains to link to the full data set and pay only for actual user clicks. Licensing fees are only due when users request audio, images, or related content from eSpindle's servers, and the overall expenditure is much lower than a static license, which is usually issued on an annual basis.
"Providing an extensive set of data is a powerful asset on the Web, because it increases the value of your site as a resource," says Warda. "However, data analytics show that only a small percentage of users will actually utilize the data, so SaaS is a very attractive way to offer grow the scope of your data."
The concept is cost-effective even for high-traffic sites, and especially valuable for smaller and medium-sized domains. No long-term contract is needed, and the data is easily integrated.
The service is a side-product of eSpindle Learning's online vocabulary and spelling coaching program, www.LearnThatWord.org.
Revenues support literacy initiatives worldwide, for example Vocabulary Juntion, a campaign making free tutoring available to 3rd graders nationwide.
