• The flowering glume is awned, strongly 5-nerved, nerves scabrid and ciliate, the lateral nerves being marginal.
• Spikelets are 1 - to 2-flowered, jointed on very short pedicels which bear persistent scabrid or barbed bristles (modified branchlets).
• In most grasses the surfaces are rough or scabrid to the touch owing to the presence of regular rows of exceedingly fine sharp pointed minute hairs.
• 3-nerved, paleate; palea is complicate; keels are strong, scabrid or ciliate.
