If a photon has more energy than the required amount, then the extra energy is lost (unless a photon has twice the required energy, and can create more than one electron-hole pair, but this effect is not significant). From Wordnik.com. [The British National Party] Reference
When photons from the sun are absorbed, their energy creates electron-hole pairs that can be separated within a "depletion zone," a microscopic region at the p-n junction measuring only a couple of micrometers across, then collected as electricity. This is where the quantum confinement effects become very useful, as the effects couple photogenerated electrons and holes into bound electron-hole pairs called excitons, and encourage the efficient formation of more than one exciton from a single absorbed photon. This is a problem that requires multiple solutions as a consequence of the different parts that are needed to form a simple transistor: the electron-hole transporting p-type semiconductor, the electron-transporting n-type semiconductor, the insulating dielectric layer to keep them apart, and the electrodes to get the current into and out of the transistor. RELTRON Fast EL MAPPER SYSTEM SPECIFICATIONS - ICS 1000 EL Image Analysis Suite Electroluminescence Image Analysis function operates as a sub-set of the ICS 1000EL Imaging Control Suite: Electroluminescence Image Analysis is possible as the intensity of an emitted EL signal from Photovoltaic devices is a function of the electron-hole concentration; which in turn is exponentially related to the applied forward bias voltage (the well known IV curve of a diode).
