Dictionaries today tend to be somewhat encyclopedic, if not by virtue of entries that, for some unknown reason, many scholars consider nonlexical (e.g., proper names), then because they contain information about the lexicon that is felt to be encyclopedic (e.g., usage notes, synonym and antonym lists, synonym discriminations, illustrations, etc.).
