After the ritenuto the matter becomes more affecting; the sighs and groans, yet for a while kept under restraint, grow louder with the increasing agitation, till at last the whole being is moved to its very depths. From Wordnik.com. [Frederic Chopin as a Man and Musician]
The nut tree before the house puts forth its green leaves and sheds its fragrance; its blossoms are lovingly embraced by the soft breezes, whispering to each other two by two, and offer their heads to be kissed, nodding and bowing; the song must be sung with an equal fragrance, each musical phrase in one breath: that is, with six inaudible breathings, without ritenuto. 'l duca Cosimo lo pose a sedere insieme con certi altri suoi colleghi, si adirò malamente; e se la disputa della provvisione non l' avesse ritenuto, sarebbe ito a servire papa Pagolo terzo. From Wordnik.com. [Renaissance in Italy, Volume 1 (of 7) The Age of the Despots] Reference
Not that an individual's interpretation of compositions should never change, but a musician who truly understands music and reads it correctly would almost never have a drastic change in interpretation because their intrinsic understanding of the music which shaped their initial interpretation would only allow for minor changes in certain aspects of their presentation of a piece, for example, the pacing of a ritenuto, but not a total reworking of the phrasing, which would require an entirely different understanding of the structure of the piece.
