Most students speak a language other than English at home, and many have only basic or less than basic language skills.
Helms' principal, Harriet McLean says "The students are very sweet but we have a lot of work to do because they don't come from homes where they are prepared for school the way the middle class prepares their children for school."
eSpindle Learning is providing free licenses to all students to help them take a leap ahead.
Rewards wait for students who study the largest number of words via www.eSpindle.org.
Many students Students also participated in the Helms-exclusive online Spelling Bee, facilitated via eSpindle's technology.
In a concentrated effort, eSpindle Learning donated 1,400 scholarship licenses to four elementary schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) to enhance instruction.
Students will have access to free vocabulary and spelling coaching for 5 years. Delegating the practice component of vocabulary instruction to eSpindle frees up valuable time teachers can use for other activities in the classroom.
eSpindle has been used in the after school program of Goodwill Industries of Silicon Valley to help underserved high school students prepare for the exit exam.
In the evaluation report following the initial introductory period, all students remarked on how easy it was to use the web site and how easy it was to understand instructions.
They also emphasized how useful using eSpindle has been to raise their vocabulary skill and improve their confidence both reading and writing.
