An Online Spelling Test and Tutor

The spelling test is an American tradition, as old as the concept of public education. Generations of students have grown up learning a list of words during the week that is then subject of the Friday spelling test.

Nearly as old as the tradition is the notion that this system does not work for a lot of the students - a surprise test administered on the words of the previous week on Monday frequently shows that most students have already forgotten most of the words they had memorized for Friday's test.

Instead of truly learning the words, lots of students just learn how to "cram" something into short term memory. In addition, no follow-up tutoring and assistance is given to students who have not yet mastered the words.

With the current system, enormous amounts of time are invested for a fairly small amount of progress. It has been estimated that on average English teachers spend 90 hours per year, per classroom on spelling instruction. Students spend on average 135 hours learning new words, and parents chime in 25 hours.

eSpindle was founded by a parent-initiated non-profit organization to replace the current testing practice with a result-oriented and reliable tutoring concept.

eSpindle not only tests to determine what students don't know, but then incorporates the solution right into the program -- saving the learning data into an individual learning profile maintained independently for each student.

Words are then repeated based on a student's learning profile, personal goal setting and skill level, until the student has securely learned the content that was previously problematic.
By using eSpindle, all the teacher or parent needs to do is log in and verify through the performance page that the student is completing study quizzes regularly - the Testudy technology guarantees that words are reliably learned, whether that means three or 333 repetitions!

Words can be uploaded for priority study, either by the student individually or centralized by a teacher (or multiple teachers).

Based on a foundation of about 100,000 words, eSpindle teaches new words and their spelling convention by using audio, brief definitions, sample sentences with audio and direct links to more extensive online resources.
